How to Add an ExternalDVD Burner to a MacBook

While almost all external DVD burners are compatible with MacBook computers, earlier versions of Mac OSX lack drivers for certain brands of external drives. Rather than comb through the minutiae of your MacBook operating system's files, simply download a free, catch-all driver pack called "PatchBurn".

Instructions
 1

Visit the download page for PatchBurn, listed in the "Resources" section of this article.

 2

Click on the "Download" button next to the version of PatchBurn designed for your version of OSX (i.e. 10.2, 10.3 or 10.4).

 3

Double-click on the ".sit" file you downloaded to your desktop to unpack it.

 4

In the unpacked folder, double-click on the "PatchBurn" icon to run the program, which will install all of the drivers you need for an external DVD burner.

 5

Plug the externalDVD burner into the wall outlet.

 6

Plug the external DVD burner's USB connector into your MacBook's USB port. Your computer will automatically detect and recognize the new DVD burner.
