How to Add a Bigger Hard Drive to a Toshiba

Eventually, every laptop will run out of room on its hard drive as you continue to install new programs and download new files. If you need a boost in storage space, you can replace the current hard drive with a bigger one. Replacing a Toshiba laptop hard drive doesn't require special tools, so it can be done without the help of a computer specialist. Depending on the specific model of your Toshiba laptop, you may need to remove another part first to reach the hard drive

1
Save any files that you need in the current hard drive to an external device, such as a flash memory stick or a rewritable CD.

2
Turn off the Toshiba laptop, and close the display's lid. Unplug the power cord and any other cables that are connected to the laptop.

Flip the laptop onto its back so that the battery port is facing up toward you. Push down the battery latch and then slide the battery out of the laptop's case.

4
Release the static electricity in your body by touching any solid metal object that is connected to the floor.

5
Remove the screw at the lower-right end of the laptop, and pull the plastic cover off the Toshiba laptop case. Check to see if the hard drive is immediately visible or if there is a metal plate and part of the CD or DVD drive visible.

6
Take out the screw at the right side of the Toshiba laptop case that holds the CD or DVD drive in place if there is a metal plate. Pull the drive out of the laptop and set it aside.

7
Remove the screws holding the metal plate in place and pull it out of the laptop. Remove the screw holding the hard drive to the case. Slide the hard drive out of the laptop.

8
Pull off the rubber side rails located on both sides of the hard drive. Put the side rails on your replacement hard drive. Slide the new drive into the open hole on the laptop.

9
Set the metal plate back into place if one was present, and reattach the screws. Slide the CD or DVD drive back into place, and reconnect its screw.

10
Return the laptop to its original upright position and open up the display lid. Power on the computer. Put the operating system recovery disk that came with the Toshiba laptop into the disk drive.

11
Complete the installation instructions on the screen to install the operating system on the new hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
You don't need to remove the CD or DVD drive if there is no metal plate over the hard drive. In some Toshiba laptop models, the hard drive is far enough away from the DVD drive that there is no plate separating the two devices.

Never touch any laptop computer components without first releasing the static electricity in your body. You can completely ruin the hard drive or CD drive through electrostatic discharge.
